"One year later training at WebStrengthCoach.com
Over the past year I have had the privilege to train with Bob Whelan through his site webstrengthcoach.com. I've gained more in this past year training with Coach Whelan than my last 9 years of training combined. My bodyweight has climbed nearly 20 solid pounds in a year with all of my lifts increasing between 20-90 pounds. Furthermore, the knowledge I have gained in strength training, coaching and the iron game is insurmountable.
Coach Whelan is far more than a strength coach, he is a teacher, motivator, and a mentor. Through our many phone calls, I have been able to gain insight to the most important principles of strength training, enabling me to sort between the "has-beens" and the "good guys" in the field today. I've been able to form my own strength training philosophy while keeping an open mind to the fact that many other methods and tools work as long as they stay in line with the fundamentals of strength training. Coach Whelan expects a lot whether through my increases in poundage, commitment to eating, or academics to become a strength coach. None-the-less, coach Whelan is always there to provide positive encouragement and to remind me of my end goal. Most importantly, I receive a great deal of mentoring from Coach Whelan on a weekly basis. We talk about the importance of education through degrees, which certifications to receive, books to read, and future business strategies. I cannot be more grateful for the opportunity to train with Bob Whelan and I look forward to our next year of training together."

"I have just finished four weeks of online training with Bob. Even though it was online training, I felt Bob´s intense presence all the time like he was with me when I had my meals, at my training sessions (strength, cardio and motivational sessions). He creates a very personal relationship with you and also has a razor sharp analytical ability during the Skype calls. Bob can really pick your brain and find out what is best for you. He really makes you work and soon I realized there are no short cuts to real result. Bob has taught me how to train, eat and to develop a mental attitude that will not only influence how I look at training, eating and motivation, but also how I can move forward in all aspects of my life".

"Thank goodness for 'Maximum' Bob!
After 18 years of hitting the iron, after some good gains despite my many injuries I healed from, life got in the way. In mid-2010, I was laid off from my job; I enrolled in court reporting school; the subsequent job I took to replace the one that had rotating call/late nights that was an hour away, saw me laid off again in 11 months; I was unemployed for almost two years; the job I took to replace my lost income and try to recover was a living, breathing hell hole where I was bullied constantly; I went back to the place of employment where I was laid off originally to lick my wounds so I could finish school; finishing school, opening up my own business that ended up failing; my finances and credit wrecked; going back to the place where I was first laid off again and securing employment, but failing to obtain a promotion; all of the while, dealing with a demanding in-law, my marriage teetering, and raising a family. Truly, I was done—financially, emotionally, mentally, and physically. I indulged in base habits that I thought were giving me peace and I was broken in every way. So as you well know, dear reader, those four years were not kind to me and my cross was heavy.
Despite this, I knew I had to get my life back on track again. With nothing to lose, I prayed for a direction. Within days, I was lead to Maximum Bob. After he told me his expectations, directions, program, and his approach he would use with me, I gave—and I still give—my total trust to him due to the thoroughness of his care; if he is a surgeon, he is the Surgeon General, complete with a great bedside manner who truly cares for those under his charge. He has rebuilt me from the inside first by enabling me to build my fragile faith in God back and heal my broken spirit. His contagious enthusiasm and his sense of humor was the balm that enabled me to face life again. He has taught me how not to sell myself short and think big again. He is truly everything physical culture was and is. I pass on his lessons to my children. I pray they will be nourished by those lessons as I was, still am, and will be. These things I cannot put a price tag on.
Like I had mentioned earlier, I gave it all to Maximum Bob—and that meant that I had to let go of some of my preconceived notions and bad habits that I had obtained in the past 18 years. Initially, I thought that cardio was bad and would hurt my progress; I thought what I was doing with the weights was enough; and in the past, I overthought a program to the point where I couldn’t give my all to it. With the letting go of my preconceived notions and giving all trust to Bob, I felt as if I was starting over. My poundages were light, starting with 100 for 10 reps the military press, 120 for 15 reps in the cable row, 85 for 10 reps in the thick bar curl, 115 in the bench press with 18 reps, 120 for 10 reps in the cable pulldown, and 95 for 20 in the squat. Level 1 on the elliptical, for cardio, almost killed me. I had not been this weak since I first started training in high school. Four years of doing nothing had caught up with me.
Currently, about 6 weeks later, I have a ton more energy and I do not ever remember feeling this good. My poundages today will see me doing 175 for 8 in the bench press; 175 for 8 in the cable row, 100 in the thick bar curl, 120 for 8 in the military press, 160 in the cable pulldown, and 130 for 20 in the squat—and I’m far from done. I’m also a few sessions away from going to Level 5 in the elliptical, interval style; thus, I have my wind back. As a side note, I firmly believe that cardio will help strength training; unless you are training for a marathon, cardio and strength training go hand-in-glove.
I said it once, and I’ll say it again: You cannot go wrong under Maximum Bob’s tutelage—whether in-person or on webstrengthcoach.com--and I trust him with my life. Why? This man’s time invested in me was—and still is—the most valuable thing akin perfect carat, clarity, and cut diamond; he gives his all to his trainees and it shows. I cannot thank him enough and tell you that if you’re even thinking about training with him, do it. You will not be disappointed. He is a truly is a coach, motivator, mentor, and a friend which God Himself has given me to be able to stand up to life once again. He and his friendship has made me a better man, inside and out. Deo gratias, Deo gratias, Deo Gratias.
I'm very thankful to Bob for his kindness and encouragement. In closing, I'll tell everyone this: Bob will not BS you; he is an honest straight-shooter whom I have no doubt you'll trust as I do and you can do no better than him and the knowledge he possesses.
Cheers!"

"I always struggled with my weight and also with my fitness for most of my life. I also struggle with recurring bouts of depression and anxiety that have been plaguing me for a long time. When I first met Bob in Washington, DC, I knew something was 'different'. I was in seminary training to be a Catholic priest, and I was stuck in one of those depressive ruts. Bob's positivity, energy, and knowledge was so uplifting, and seeing what he has done for others, I decided to sign up on the spot. Bob is indeed a master at his craft - working out with him, I got a lot stronger in my mid-late 30's, mentally, spiritually, and physically, than I ever was before, even when I was at my supposed 'fittest' when I was serving on active duty in the U.S. Navy in my early 20's. Now as a Catholic priest working far away in the People's Democratic Republic of New Jersey, Bob continues to help me improve my strength and health in all dimensions of my life. I sure do miss the old days in DC, but even by telephone and internet, Bob continues to patiently show me the way to strength - in body, in mind, and in soul. Bob is an OUTSTANDING coach and gentleman - he is a contemporary living example of how the strong men of old lived, but with his own infectious positive outlook and philosophy of life. It does not matter whether you train with him in person, via telephone, or via internet/email -as long as you are willing to put in the work necessary to change, Bob WILL change your life for the better by giving you the tools to shape a stronger and healthier YOU, in ALL aspects of your life.

“ I have taken on a big role in my home Town of Broken Hill Australia. I am now the strength Coach of my old Australian Rules Football team. I have always believed how important strength training is for Football players and all athletes. It is a Supreme health builder, Increases all –round physical toughness and hardihood and strengthens joints and connective tissue.
I never hesitated to contact my friend of 15 years in Bob Whelan who as we all know has a huge amount of knowledge and experience in strength training. After explaining to Bob the equipment I had available in our Club Gym and the players’ involved he designed an excellent program to suit my players who will be rotated through in groups of 6 at a time.
Bob designed the program into 3 stations. ... Training nights are Monday and Friday. All workouts are recorded and players can see their progress. Bob suggested to get my players to work on 3 things: FOCUS, FORM AND PROGRESSION. GREAT ADVICE. I have taken his advice and have Strength athletes to help me.
The season has been going for 4 weeks and already the players are enjoying it and showing improvement. I will contact Bob in 4 weeks time and let him know of the players progress, it is going to be hard work as I have 40 players to rotate each training night in groups of 6. But with Bob’s tutelage it is easy going at the moment.
Thanks Bob”

"Coach Bob,
We are 4 weeks + into hard training under your coaching expertise, and I wanted to thank you for what you have helped me do for my nearly 50 years’ young self. If someone is determined and willing to listen and work hard, you will coach them to progress and to become stronger and healthier in body and mind.
This is hard work through a whole body training program, driving progressive resistance in compound strength movements, where you must give 100 percent through a full range of motion while using good form.
That hard works is mine to do; however, your intelligence as well as extensive formal education and real world natural (no drugs) experience behind the program design maximizes my time by incorporating “tinkering” exercises for active “rest” between working the main muscle groups, which allows for just enough recovery to be ready to train those muscle groups again.
Through your online coaching we communicate briefly nearly every day with regard to my diet, cardiovascular exercise and strength training. You have even provided excellent counsel with regard to proper mental attitude during training and life in general. In addition to that contact we have developed a standing call every two weeks where the two of us discuss my progress, challenges and questions. It is a perfect arrangement.
You have cleared my head of all the noise and garbage with regard to strength training and overall fitness, that is so pervasive in the strength and fitness industry. The focus is on the basic and proven programs and techniques, developed decades before the waters were so horribly polluted by the steroids, chrome and flash of the modern day social gym culture.
You are a proponent of proper and continuing education, and what I find so remarkable is that so much of the homework/ reading you assigned is actually books written in part or whole by you. Other books about physical culture are written by others that you know, or even by those who have you write a chapter in their book. I find myself rereading so many of these books as they are a revelation in terms of common sense and direction in my training. This is solid information whereas 95% of everything else I have watched or read is the noise and garbage that filled my head, destroyed my progression, caused me injury and wasted my time.
With all that said, while it is a surprise to me but likely not you, I have added 30lbs + to my bench press, 35lbs+ to my bent over rows, 50lbs + to my squats, and 55lbs+ to my pull downs. I could go on with more examples. This progression is in a matter of 4 weeks, and that is doing the exercises properly, controlling the weight and remaining healthy. Let’s keep in mind that this progress is while I am working 60hrs a week, taking a week's’ vacation, engaging in outdoor recreational activities, and activities and important responsibilities specific to my family.
Coach Bob, I wish I had started training with you decades ago, not 4 weeks ago; however, I am looking forward to my future progression under your guidance. I am eager to see what the next 4 weeks, 4 months and 4 years+ will show in terms of my overall health and strength.
Best,"

"After 4 weeks with Coach Whelan's training routine and nutritional guidance, I was able to pack on 11 pounds and progress 10-20 pounds in most of my work sets. After our first talk, Coach Whelan laid out a specific training routine and nutrition plan to reach my goals. Coach Whelan was there every step of the way to give me encouragement, as well as to critique and make the right adjustments for me to move forward. The mentoring I received, between the phone consultations and suggested reading lists, have given me the confidence that I now have the tools to continue to move forward in my training. Thank you coach for making my goals your goal and staying on top of me to see them through. I highly recommend coach Whelan, (WebStrengthCoach.com), to anyone who is serious about strength training without the excuses.

"As a professional performing strongman and World Record Holder, I rely heavily on my training to keep me in top physical shape. What I learned, however was that as I approached 38 years old, I began to feel as though I was falling apart. To be more specific, I have tendinitis in my right wrist and pectoral muscle, a "funny click" in my right knee, and a sore area deep under one of my traps. I began to feel as though my training AND performances were working against me. To still be so far from my "golden years", I wondered how my body would survive the trek. After all, I plan to train and perform for many decades to come. I was at my wits' end and had begun to contemplate quitting or drastically changing programs as a last resort. That is, until I was put it contact with "Maximum" Bob Whelan, THE Web Strength Coach. Bob ... ( Web Strength Coach.com ) ... got my compass heading North again! Not only am I nearly in the best shape of my life in only 5 months, I am making tremendous drug-free gains in strength and conditioning. This is all happening at 38 years old to a guy who's trained since he was 14 years old! Besides all of the gains, my dings and dents are much less significant than before. On top of all of this, I have more family time than before, which is a big plus when you have a wife and kids.
Bob is the real deal, and he is 4 Star TRex approved!"

"Hi Max Bob! I just wanted to tell you that your program really works! I'm so happy I signed up a few months ago. I've already gained 12 pounds of muscle and I’ve put about 25 pounds on most of my exercises. The program you designed for me was tough but my whole body definitely gets worked like never before. Your improvisation was great too as I have only limited equipment training at home. I guess the barbell is all you really need to have, right? Thanks again Bob, it was just a small amount of money to get your direction and well spent!"

"I was working in Baghdad, Iraq during the height of the Iraq War when I had a telephone consult with Bob while on leave. Very thorough and well planned, we came up with a program for me that worked and was flexible enough that I could adjust it as needed (given equipment available in often less than desirable locations). I was not new to strength training but Bob cleared up many things for me and his approaches I still use when designing programs now for myself or my own clients. I worked up to 20 rep squats with 305 under his instruction and added 15 SOLID pounds of muscle in about 8 weeks. I only wish I could had measured my fat loss too. As soon as I recover from those 20 rep squat workouts, I will do them again!!"

“After my telephone consultation with Bob I was armed to my teeth with all the necessary training information to get back to training after an 8 year layoff. Not only was the information worth every penny but also the way Bob presents his training wisdom inspires you to rush to the gym and have the workout of your life. Bob presents the information in a very simple way that makes 100% sense and which everyone can understand. Bob gives hope to guys like me, (who just turned 50, working full time with a family), that training and making gains is still possible. I’ve just finished my first workout based on the information Bob gave and I cannot remember I ever had a better workout. I cannot wait for my next workout!”

"It has been an amazing journey working with you training on-line. Almost as if training with you in-person and in someways the benefits have lasted longer. (Sarah Jane was a former client of mine at WST) Above all, training and daily logging of my workout with you has given me an amazing level of self-accountability to my strength and health, creating great training habits. Coupled with that, you helped me create a fueled nutritional plan to power my workouts and hectic lifestyle that take into full account my vast dietary restrictions. Finally, I can't give you enough thanks for working with me through some heath issues that arose towards the end of my first three month training with you, and for giving me a bit more time on the calendar to make-up for the time I was laid up."

"Bob Whelan is one of the main reasons I am training harder than ever following hip replacement in 2009 and shoulder surgery in November 2012. He told me to increase my protein intake at every meal and advised me to limit my strength training workouts to two times a week (whole body). This has enabled me to get back to my playing weight of 195. When I consulted with Bob I was weighing about 180. Through his guidance I am now playing masters rugby twice a year and have remained an active hands on physical education teacher and coach. When I first called Bob he missed my call, but he interrupted his own workout [ He practices what he preaches ] to call me right back. 'Above and beyond.' That's how Bob has treated me and I'm sure that's the way he lives his life. Thanks Bob and keep up the good work."

"If you train at WST you will reach your goals. I have been there for three months and very happy so far with my results. When I first met Bob at my orientation we talked about my goals: gaining weight, getting stronger, how much I would have to eat. He told me in September "by this time next year you will be a solid 200+ pounds." And I was kind of surprised because I couldn't see myself being that big. I thought it would take a long time for me to get to 200. I weighed 165 at the time and was planning on putting on 15 maybe 20 pounds max but thought 200+ pounds - no way. Right now its mid November about two and a half months since joining WST and I am 192. Even Bob was surprised how much I have gained in less than three months! I am getting stronger and lifting heavier each session.”

Very Respectfully,"

“I didn’t know what to expect from your phone consultation … but I was most impressed! Thanks for your help. The consultation flew by and I appreciate your straight talking, no nonsense style. I’ve now got balanced routines to get to work on. I went into the first workout on Saturday with added zeal and enthusiasm. I’m pretty determined to get stronger and the phone consultation has definitely kick started and given me great motivation to succeed.”

“I’m 65 years old and after four months of training with Bob, ... I can honestly say that I feel younger, more flexible, definitely much stronger and have an over-all improved feeling of health and well being. I was surprised ... that most of the weights on the machines ... have progressed by 25 to 50 pounds in such a short time! Progressive strength training with a pro like Bob Whelan is truly a blessing to me; it is like finding a ‘fountain of youth’ of sorts. His positive motivation and professional attitude is also a pleasure to work with. Give Bob a call, stop aging and start YOUTHING!”

"Bob just celebrated his 20th year as owner of Whelan Strength Training where he is a professional strength and conditioning coach. Hundreds of athletes and weekend warriors have passed through his gym over the years, including some top pro football and basketball players, and all are stronger and faster today because of Bob Whelan.
I have known Bob since the early 1990's when he started writing for my magazine The Iron Master. I always looked forward to Bob's articles which were loaded with timely information on strength training. He also contributed many articles to the top muscle magazines of the 1990's and 2000 era and in the process became very well known in the Iron Game community.
Bob is a unique, charismatic, passionate individual, with a great sense of humor, who has taken strength training many steps beyond the norm and made it ten times better."

"If I have an original contribution to HARDGAINER,...I'll first turn to my article and check for spelling and punctuation errors. It may surprise some to know that after that has been done, I don't usually read what I have written, at least not at first. In HARDGAINER, I first read Bob Whelan's column. Bob and I often talk or email to discuss some aspect of training, and have many productive conversations. I respect his opinion and perspective on all areas of the weight game, and he's to be commended for his hard hitting and common-sense approach to things."

Victor Peck completed a whole body workout before doing the manual resistance and wrist roller. A few other clients who came to watch the filming also joined in on the wrist rolling.
Melvin Tuten an NFL player (Bengals, Broncos and Panthers) completed a whole body workout before doing the sandbag lift. I just showed his last rep on the Hammer Leg Press on this segment so you would get the idea that this was a finisher.
Themba Masimini completed a whole body workout before doing the farmers walk. I just showed his last rep on the Hammer Deadlift on this segment so you would get the idea that this was a finisher.
